What is bamboo?

Bamboo is actually a type of grass  (Poaceae, subfamily Bambusoideae, tribe Bambuseae — check Wikipedia for more species details at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bamboo).

You should love bamboo…

Bamboo products have been enjoying a high profile the past few years because use of bamboo is considered more environmentally friendly than many other products. Of course, that’s only part of the equation — bamboo is very versatile and has a number of properties that make it suitable in a wide range of scenarios.

I first encountered bamboo being used in an industrial application as scaffolding in Hong Kong. I grew up in the construction industry (plant hire and ground works) and, truthfully, I was blown away to see bamboo in place of steel scaffolding poles in construction of high rise buildings in the middle of the city. It was explained to me at the time that bamboo has excellent tensile strength and that bamboo scaffolding is better able to withstand Hong Kong typhoons — it’s the old moral of the flexible sapling bending and surviving while the might oak is destroyed by high winds.

I was also told that an added benefit was that if the scaffolding should fall, it was less dangerous for the people below. Mind you, a bamboo pole hitting you end on from thirty stories above will kill you just as surely as a steel scaffolding pole.

Across Indonesia, China & Japan (probably throughout Asia but these are the countries I know best), bamboo has been used for construction, flooring, housing, decoration, furniture, craft, art, writing (both paper and pen) weaponry, kitchen utensils and cooking, food, clothing — I could probably go on but, let’s face it: since ancient times, bamboo has been used for just about everything and is still an important staple material today.

It is strong, versatile, grows quickly (fully mature in under five years) and, for such a useful crop, has a very high yield. Now wonder we love it.

Bamboo in our Catalogue

At the time of writing, we have nearly 500 different bamboo products available in our catalogue… I’ve listed all of them below but if that takes too much back and forth, you can jump to the Bamboo Products page which has all the products and notes the different categories at the top:

Updated Bird Cages from Bali

These Bird Cages are made from recycled teak wood (off cuts and bits and bobs from wood house and floor construction) for the frame, top & base… the bars are made from rattan.

bcg-0120xWe’re not certain they’re strong enough to hold anything bigger than a small to medium bird – we think the bars aren’t strong enough to hold anything bigger but they’re a sturdy and eye catching update to the old range and are durable enough for both indoor and outdoor use.

The line has also extended a little to include CD racks (we know, we know… no-one uses CDs anymore but they’re easy enough for us to refit for BluRay or whatever you like) and some framed Buddha heads.
