It’s partly to do with the Hindu religion in which incense is frequently used to raise energy levels and carry prayers to the gods. Even very small streets in Bali tend to have at least one place where you can buy incense (dupa) sticks and sometimes that’s the best-stocked, brightest and most modern shop in the area. There are always small, fragrant offerings burning in the mornings around the fronts of houses and offices.

Culturally, aromatic oils were used in Bali and across Indonesia simply as perfumes and were traditionally used in a number of traditional rituals prior to marriage.

Aside from the cultural and religious aspects, Bali has also established itself as a world class destination for spas and healing.

Incense Holders and Oil Burners from Bali

Our ceramic oil and scent burners are made by the Caluk ceramic factory in Bali.

Caluk are a little more formal and business-like than many of our crafts people in that they do have their own factory and they have long outgrown the familyonly side of business. That said, they are still the kind of people you meet and work with face-to-face and all of their items still have that personal touch and attention to detail. Our opinion is that for quality and price in Bali, they can’t be beaten.

We offer a range of massage, aromatherapy and fragrant oils all mixed by hand from selected roots, woods and essential oils found in Bali and across Indonesia. Our main supplier is called Daun (meaning ‘leaf’) and we’ve been working with them for well over a decade.

Daun also makes our gift sets with soaps and small fragrant woods and our incense sticks.

Visit our Body & Soul category at the shop to see more:

Suar and Albesia Wood Carvings Handmade in Bali. In stock in Britain / The UK.

Bali is a treasure trove for handcarved wooden statues and decorative wood carvings…

We stock beautifully finished, glossy art pieces made from Suar Wood to fun, kids-friendly, cartoon style albesia wood carvings.

Suar Wood Carvings from Bali

Our abstract suar wood carvings are provided by the Rengkig family in Northern Ubud (Tegallalang).

The raw lumber is purchased locally in small volumes but actually originates from government run plantations in Java.

The lumber is hand cut to approximate size while the wood is still wet and the design then marked out in pencil.

The motif / model is then chiseled out by one of Rengkig’s sons or nephews.

When the rough cut work is finished, the the carving is then handed over to another member of the family for detailing and sanding before being stacked outside to dry.

After a week or so drying outdoors, the carvings come back into the workshop for more sanding and detailing before being stained with a mixture of petrol and wax (same type of wax polish as Kiwi shoe polish). After polishing, the statue finally attains the deep, warm, glossy finish you see in our pictures.

Our albesia wood statues are provided by a very wide and diverse group of carvers and craftspeople around Ubud in Bali.

Albesia pieces are less expensive than wood statues of a similar size made from Suar. They also tend to be more colorful and fun — if you’re looking at wood carvings for kids or painted wood carvings, they’re most likely made from this kind of wood.

From start to finish, even a small order of suar or albesia wood statues can take up to 5 weeks.
