Bali is a treasure trove for handcarved wooden statues and decorative wood carvings…
We stock beautifully finished, glossy art pieces made from Suar Wood to fun, kids-friendly, cartoon style albesia wood carvings.
Suar Wood Carvings from Bali
Our abstract suar wood carvings are provided by the Rengkig family in Northern Ubud (Tegallalang).
The raw lumber is purchased locally in small volumes but actually originates from government run plantations in Java.
The lumber is hand cut to approximate size while the wood is still wet and the design then marked out in pencil.
The motif / model is then chiseled out by one of Rengkig’s sons or nephews.
When the rough cut work is finished, the the carving is then handed over to another member of the family for detailing and sanding before being stacked outside to dry.
After a week or so drying outdoors, the carvings come back into the workshop for more sanding and detailing before being stained with a mixture of petrol and wax (same type of wax polish as Kiwi shoe polish). After polishing, the statue finally attains the deep, warm, glossy finish you see in our pictures.
Albesia Wood Carvings from Bali
Our albesia wood statues are provided by a very wide and diverse group of carvers and craftspeople around Ubud in Bali.
Albesia pieces are less expensive than wood statues of a similar size made from Suar. They also tend to be more colorful and fun — if you’re looking at wood carvings for kids or painted wood carvings, they’re most likely made from this kind of wood.
From start to finish, even a small order of suar or albesia wood statues can take up to 5 weeks.
